What causes nail pops in drywall?

Most nail pops happen because the wood framing behind the drywall shrinks as it dries. The nail stays put in the stud while the wood shrinks around it, so the nail head pushes out and shows as a small bump or round crack.

Pops are common in newer homes, often in the first year or two, because the lumber is still drying out. Seasonal swings in humidity can add to the problem. Other causes include nails that were not driven tight, drywall that was not pressed firmly to the framing, warped or twisted studs, and fasteners that are the wrong length.

Most nail pops are cosmetic. One or two pops are not a sign of a structural problem. But if you see many new pops along with cracks above doors, doors that suddenly stick, or floors that slope, it is worth having a structural pro take a look.

The usual fix is simple. The panel is pressed tight to the stud, and a drywall screw is driven an inch or two from the popped nail. The old nail is set deeper or pulled out. Then the spot is patched with joint compound, sanded smooth and touched up with paint. In a new home, waiting until the framing has dried out helps the repair last. If you have a few pops to deal with, here is how our drywall repair works.
