Closets take a lot of weight. A rod full of coats or jeans pulls down every day. Over time, brackets loosen, shelves tip and rods bow in the middle. Sometimes the whole thing lands on the floor with your clothes on top.
Fortress Home Services installs and fixes closet shelving for homes in Chattanooga, Hixson, Ooltewah, Collegedale, Signal Mountain, East Brainerd, Fort Oglethorpe and Ringgold. We put up wire or wood shelving kits you have bought, re-hang shelves and rods, and add support where a rod sags. We do not build custom cabinets or built-in closet systems. If you have a kit in a box and no time to put it up, that is what we are here for.
Signs your closet needs work
- A closet rod that bows in the middle
- A shelf that tips forward or pulls away from the wall
- Brackets that wiggle when you touch them
- A closet kit still sitting in its box
- A rod or shelf that already fell down
- Holes in the wall where the old shelf used to be
What the crew does
- Put together and install wire or wood shelving kits you bought
- Find studs so brackets and supports hold the load
- Re-hang shelves and rods that came loose or fell
- Add a center support to a rod that sags
- Swap a bent rod for a new one you have on hand
- Level each shelf and rod so things do not slide
- Patch old anchor holes left behind
Why it pays to hang it right
Clothes are heavier than they look, and a full rod adds up fast. A long rod with no support in the middle will start to bend. Brackets held only by drywall can pull out. Tying the brackets into studs, and adding a middle support on long spans, is what keeps a closet standing.
Shelving kits come with their own hardware, but it is not always the best match for your wall. We read the kit's guide and check the wall before we start. If the parts in the box will not hold well in your spot, we tell you before anything goes up. The crew wears shoe booties and uses drop cloths, so your floors and clothes stay clean.
The Winter Inside List includes hanging shelves, rods and mounts, so members can save closet work for that visit. A single sagging rod or a fallen shelf is a good job for the $59 Fix-It Hour. A full closet or several kits that run past 2 hours can be quoted or done on the spot if you ask, 10% off for members.
Closet shelving and rods questions
Do you build custom closets?
No. We do not build custom cabinetry or built-in closet systems. We install shelving kits you have bought, and we re-hang or fix the shelves and rods you already have. If you want a full custom closet, a cabinet maker is the right call.
Can you fix a rod that sags in the middle?
Yes, in most cases. A sag usually means the span is too long or the rod is too thin for the load. We can add a center support tied into the wall, or swap in a sturdier rod. If the rod is bent, a new one is often the better fix.
Should I buy the kit before you come?
Yes. Please have the kit or parts on hand before the visit. Measure the closet first so the kit fits the space. If you are not sure what to get, we can look at the closet during a visit and tell you what size and type would work.
