Most people have a stack of frames leaning in a closet. Hanging them takes a level, a tape measure, the right hooks and some patience. One frame a little off can make a whole wall look wrong. A heavy mirror on a weak nail can come down and break.

Fortress Home Services hangs pictures, mirrors and art for homes in Chattanooga, Hixson, Ooltewah, Collegedale, Signal Mountain, East Brainerd, Fort Oglethorpe and Ringgold. We measure, mark and level each piece. We put heavy items into studs when we can, and we use anchors sized for the weight when we cannot. Gallery walls, big mirrors and a single print over the couch are all fair game.

Signs

Signs it is time to get your walls done

  • Frames that tilt every time a door closes
  • A heavy mirror leaning against the wall on the floor
  • Art still in the box from the last move
  • Extra nail holes from trying to get one picture right
  • A gallery wall you have planned but never started
  • A mirror hanging from one small nail in drywall
What we do

What the crew does

  • Look at the back of each piece to see how it is meant to hang
  • Find studs and check for pipes or wires before drilling
  • Pick hooks or anchors rated for the weight of each item
  • Hang heavy mirrors into studs or with heavy-duty anchors
  • Lay out gallery walls on the floor or with paper first so you can see the plan
  • Use a level so every frame sits straight
  • Fill small holes left from old nails
Why it matters

Why the hardware matters

The little nail that comes with a frame is fine for a light print. It is not made for a big mirror or a framed piece with glass. Heavy items need a stud or an anchor rated for more than they weigh. The wire or hooks on the back of the piece matter too. If they are loose or weak, we point that out before the item goes up.

A gallery wall takes more planning than it looks. The spacing between frames is what makes it look clean. We map it out before the first hole, so you can move things around without a wall full of mistakes. The crew wears shoe booties and lays down drop cloths, and we clean up the dust before we go.

The Winter Inside List includes hanging shelves, rods and mounts, so members can save their frames and mirrors for that visit. If you want a few pieces up now, the $59 Fix-It Hour is a good fit. A full house of art or a large gallery wall that runs past 2 hours can be quoted as a project, 10% off for members.

FAQ

Picture, mirror and art hanging questions

How heavy of a mirror can you hang?

It depends on the wall and the hardware. A mirror hung into studs can hold much more than one held by drywall alone. We weigh or estimate the piece, check the wall and pick hardware rated above that weight. If a spot is not a good fit for a heavy mirror, we will tell you and suggest another one.

Can you hang art on plaster or brick walls?

Often, yes. Plaster and brick need different bits and anchors than drywall, and they take more care so the wall does not crack. We look at the wall first. If something does not seem like a good idea on that surface, we will say so.

Do I need to have the gallery wall planned out?

No. You can show us the frames and tell us the look you want. We will lay out a few options so you can pick one. If you already have a plan or a photo you like, we can follow that too.
