Quarter round is the small curved strip that sits where the baseboard meets the floor. It hides the gap left at the edge of the flooring and gives the room a clean line. It takes a lot of bumps from vacuums, chair legs and pets, so it is often the first piece of trim to come loose or split.
Fortress does quarter round installation after new flooring goes in, along with fixing pieces that have pulled away, cracked or gone missing. We also reattach loose baseboard and door casing. Every piece is measured, cut to fit at the corners, nailed and finished with caulk and filler where it needs it. Painting or staining new trim to match can be part of the job. Homeowners in Ringgold, Fort Oglethorpe, Collegedale and the rest of our area can add it to their list.

- Haul off the scraps and sweep up the cuts
Why trim matters more than it looks
Trim is mostly about looks, but it does real work. The gap it hides at the edge of the floor is usually left on purpose so the flooring can expand and shrink. In a humid place like Chattanooga, wood and many other floors move a little through the year. Without trim there, that gap collects dust and crumbs, and it is hard to clean.
Loose quarter round also tends to get worse. Once one end lifts, a vacuum can catch it and snap it. Pieces nailed down into the floor can pull loose as the floor moves, which is why we fasten to the baseboard where we can. Fixing it early means fewer pieces to replace and a room that looks cared for. It also gives you a clean edge if you plan to paint or sell.
Loose trim and quarter round are on the Winter Inside List, so members get small repairs done during that 3-hour visit. A whole house of new quarter round after a flooring job is bigger than one visit. That work is quoted as a project, and members get 10% off. For a few loose runs right now, the $79 Fix-It Hour works well.
Quarter round and trim questions
What is the difference between quarter round and shoe molding?
Both are small strips that sit at the bottom of a baseboard. Quarter round is shaped like a quarter of a circle. Shoe molding is a little taller and thinner, so it sits closer to the wall. Either one hides the gap at the floor. We can match what you already have or help you pick one.
Do I need quarter round after new flooring?
Often, yes. Most flooring is laid with a small gap at the walls so it has room to move. If your baseboards stayed in place, quarter round or shoe molding is the usual way to hide that gap. If the baseboards were pulled and reset lower, you may not need it. We can take a look and tell you.
Can you paint the new trim too?
Yes. New trim can be primed and painted or stained to match the baseboard. Paint needs dry time, so a full room may take longer than one visit. On a seasonal visit we can handle smaller sections. For a larger room or a whole floor, we will quote it as a project with the member discount.
