Hanging things on a wall looks easy until the shelf tilts, the rod pulls out, or the TV ends up an inch off center. The hard part is knowing what is behind the drywall and using the right hardware for the load. A good install should look level and stay put.
Our crew mounts TVs on wall brackets, hangs floating and bracket shelves, puts up curtain rods and blinds, and hangs mirrors, art and coat hooks. We find studs, mark everything with a level, and use anchors rated for the load when a stud is not where you need it. TV mounting means the bracket and the TV only. We do not run wires inside the wall or add outlets, because we do not do electrical work. If you need a handyman near me for a move-in list of things to hang, this is the page for it.
Signs it is time to get things on the wall
- A TV on a stand you would rather clear away
- Shelves or rods that sag or pull away from the wall
- Boxes of curtain rods and frames waiting to be hung
- Holes from an old mount that need patching before a new one
- Heavy mirrors leaning on the floor against a wall
- A new home where nothing is up yet
What we hang and how
- Find studs and scan for pipes or wires before drilling
- Mount TV brackets into studs and hang the TV level
- Hang shelves, curtain rods, blinds and towel bars
- Choose wall anchors rated for the weight when studs are out of reach
- Run cords in a channel along the outside of the wall, never inside it
- Patch old holes left by past mounts
- Clean up drywall dust before we leave
Why the right mount matters
Drywall alone does not hold much weight. A screw in bare drywall can pull out under a heavy shelf or a TV, and that can damage the wall and whatever falls. Studs in most homes are spaced about 16 inches apart, though older homes and some walls differ. Using the studs, or a properly rated anchor, is what makes a mount hold.
Curtain rods take more stress than people expect, since they get tugged every day. Shelves loaded with books get heavier over time. Kids and pets add bumps and pulls. Mounting things the right way the first time means fewer holes to patch later. It also keeps the wall looking clean when you rearrange a room or get a house ready to sell.
The Winter Inside List includes hanging shelves, rods and mounts, so members can save up a list for that visit. If you just moved in and want several things up fast, the $79 Fix-It Hour is a good start. A big install day with several TVs or a full wall of shelving can be quoted as a project, 10% off for members. Hardware is billed as materials.
TV, shelf and curtain rod mounting questions
Can you hide the TV wires inside the wall?
No. Running wires or adding an outlet inside the wall is electrical work, and we do not do it. What we can do is mount the TV and run the cords in a paintable channel along the outside of the wall, so they look neater. If you want wires inside the wall, you will need an electrician for that part.
What if there is no stud where I want the shelf?
We can often shift the item a little to hit a stud, or use a board or bracket that spans two studs. For lighter items, a wall anchor rated for the weight works well. For heavy items, we will tell you honestly if a spot is not a good idea and suggest another one nearby.
Do you mount on brick, stone or tile?
Some masonry and tile walls can be drilled with the right bits and anchors. Each wall is different, and some, like a fireplace with a TV above it, need a careful look first. We check the surface, the weight and what is behind it before we say yes. If it is not a safe fit, we will tell you.
