What's the difference between a handyman and a contractor?
A handyman does small repairs and upkeep, like caulking, patching drywall and adjusting doors. A contractor takes on larger projects, often runs crews and subcontractors, and in many cases must hold a state license.
In Tennessee, a state contractor license is required for projects that cost $25,000 or more, counting labor and materials. Some Tennessee counties also have licensing rules for smaller home improvement jobs. Electrical, plumbing and HVAC work have their own separate licenses. Georgia has its own rules. Rules can change, so it is smart to check with the state licensing board before you hire anyone for a big job.
A simple way to decide is to look at the size of the work. A list of small fixes around the house is handyman work. A project that changes the structure, the wiring, the plumbing or the roof calls for a licensed contractor, and it often needs permits. Remodels, new decks, roof work and rewiring all fall in that group.
We are a home maintenance company, so our work is on the handyman side. We handle caulking, drywall patches, trim, door adjustments, weatherstripping and similar small jobs. We do not do electrical, plumbing, HVAC repair, roofing, decks, siding or drainage. If your list is mostly small fixes, the $59 Fix-It Hour is an easy way to get started.
