What is quarter round trim, and do you need it?
Quarter round is a thin strip of trim that looks like a quarter of a circle from the end. It runs along the bottom of the baseboard and hides the gap between the baseboard and the floor. Whether you need it depends on your flooring and how tightly the baseboard fits.
That gap is often there on purpose. Many floors, especially floating floors like laminate, some vinyl plank and some engineered wood, need a small expansion gap around the edges of the room. The floor grows and shrinks a little with heat and humidity. Quarter round hides the gap while still letting the floor move. In a humid place like Chattanooga, that movement can change from season to season.
You may be able to skip it. If the baseboards went in after the floor and sit snug against it, with any needed gap tucked underneath, quarter round may not be needed. Some people also prefer the cleaner look without it. Tile floors often don't need it either.
Shoe molding does the same job. It is a bit taller and thinner than quarter round, so it sticks out less into the room. Both are common choices.
Quarter round is usually nailed to the baseboard, not the floor, so a floating floor can still move under it. Over time it can pull loose, split, or get chipped by vacuums. Fixing loose trim and quarter round is on the Fortress Winter Inside List, and new quarter round installation is available as a project.
